How to Move a Refrigerator and When to Switch It On
The most common fault after a move is a fridge that stops cooling a fortnight later, and the cause is always the same: compressor oil moved out of place. This guide explains exactly how to prevent it.
When should I switch the fridge on after moving? The short answer
The waiting time depends on how and how far the fridge travelled, and the working rule is this. If it travelled upright over a short distance within the city, wait two hours before switching on. If it travelled upright on a long intercity route, wait four to six hours. If it travelled lying on its side or back — which should never happen — it must stand upright for a full twenty-four hours before power is applied. The reason is that a fridge contains a sealed refrigeration circuit holding gas and an oil that lubricates the compressor. In normal use the oil sits in the base of the compressor, but tilting or vibration pushes it into the narrow refrigeration lines. If you switch the fridge on before the oil has returned, the compressor pumps that oil into the circuit, blocking it while running itself without adequate lubrication — the quickest possible route to destroying it. Waiting a few hours saves you a fault whose repair costs close to the price of a new fridge.
The correct steps for moving a fridge
Four stages, none of which can be skipped:
6 to 12 hours before: disconnect and empty
Unplug the fridge and empty it completely. Remove all loose shelves and drawers and wrap them separately, or secure them in place with non-marking tape. Leave both doors open so any ice melts and the interior dries completely.
Clean and dry thoroughly
Wipe the interior with a water and vinegar or bicarbonate solution and dry it completely. Any remaining moisture will become odour and mould during the hours of transit in Jeddah's humid climate, and the smell can transfer to other belongings in the truck.
Secure and wrap
Tape both doors shut with tape that leaves no residue on the surface, coil and secure the power cable behind the unit, and wrap the fridge in a thick moving blanket to prevent scratching. Do not apply strong tape directly to a stainless steel front.
Upright transport, strapped
A fridge always travels upright and strapped to the truck wall. If space is short the answer is a larger vehicle, not a tilted appliance. Use a strapped appliance trolley to move it and never drag it along the ground or push it by its door.

Why fridge faults never show on moving day
The damage happens during the move but builds for weeks before it is noticed.
This explains why nobody is ever held accountable for fridge failures after a move. When a fridge is moved incorrectly and switched on immediately it does not stop working straight away; it starts cooling and appears entirely normal. But the oil that entered the refrigeration circuit gradually restricts the flow of refrigerant, and the compressor, having lost part of its oil, runs under-lubricated, heats up and is strained further with every cycle. Performance therefore declines slowly over weeks: you notice the cooling is slightly weaker, the compressor runs for longer periods, and the electricity bill has risen. Then the compressor fails completely after a month or two. By that point connecting the fault to the move has become practically impossible, and the homeowner absorbs a repair bill of between eight hundred and one thousand five hundred riyals for a failure that a two-hour wait would have prevented.

Waiting times before switching on
How long to wait before applying power, the rule we apply and recommend:
| How it travelled | Wait before switching on |
|---|---|
| Upright — short distance within the city | 2 hours |
| Upright — long intercity route | 4 – 6 hours |
| Slightly tilted for a short period | 6 – 8 hours |
| Lying on its side | A full 24 hours |
| Lying on its back (never acceptable) | 24 hours plus a technical check |
| Disconnection window before moving — within the city | At least 6 hours |
| Disconnection window before moving — intercity | At least 12 hours |
| American / side-by-side fridge | Add two hours to all of the above |
The general rule when in doubt: the longer the tilt or the rougher the road, the longer the wait. Waiting too long does no harm at all, whereas switching on too early can destroy the compressor. If you hear an unusual noise at first start-up, switch it off immediately and call a technician.
After arrival: what to do in order
Six steps from unloading to restocking safely:
Put it straight into its final position
Decide where the fridge will stand before it is unloaded and place it there directly, because moving it afterwards disturbs the oil again and restarts the waiting period. Leave at least five centimetres of ventilation behind and to the sides.
Level the feet with a slight backward tilt
Adjust the front screw feet until the fridge stands without rocking, with a very slight backward tilt that helps the doors self-close and ensures condensate drains correctly.
Wait the specified time before connecting
Do not connect the power before the waiting period in the table above has elapsed. This is the single most important step in the whole guide, and skipping it causes most post-move failures. Set a reminder so you do not forget.
Run it empty first
Once the time has passed, connect and run it completely empty for four to six hours until it reaches temperature. Loading it immediately on start-up strains the compressor during its first hours of operation after a period at rest.
Listen and check the cooling
Listen during the first hour: the compressor should run with its usual steady sound. Any clicking, intermittent metallic noise or unusual vibration means switching off immediately and calling a technician before the damage worsens.
Restock gradually
Once the fridge is fully cold, return food in stages rather than all at once. Putting a large quantity of unchilled food in at once raises the internal temperature and forces the compressor to run continuously for hours.
Simple technical background on moving fridges
Understanding what happens inside makes the rules make sense.
What happens inside a fridge when it is tilted
The refrigeration circuit is a sealed system of compressor, condenser, evaporator and very fine capillary tubing through which refrigerant flows. The compressor holds a quantity of oil in its base that lubricates its moving parts, and that oil is designed to stay there by gravity. When the fridge is tilted or laid down, oil escapes from the compressor into the discharge line and on into the condenser and capillary. The capillary is less than a millimetre across, and oil is far more viscous than refrigerant, so it creates a partial or complete blockage that disrupts the cooling cycle. At the same time the compressor runs with less oil than it needs, so it overheats and wears internally. The only remedy after a tilt is to return the fridge upright and leave it long enough for gravity to draw the oil back into the compressor base before switching on.
Why the fridge needs a disconnection window before moving at all
The window before the move serves three separate purposes. First, refrigerant in a running fridge is at differing pressures and temperatures across the circuit, and disconnecting allows pressures to equalise and the system to stabilise, making it less vulnerable to disturbance under vibration. Second, disconnection allows accumulated ice in the freezer to melt; moving a fridge containing ice means water melting inside the truck and soaking adjacent belongings, something we see frequently. Third, the shutdown allows the interior to dry completely, which matters greatly in Jeddah because moisture sealed inside a closed appliance for hours in the heat produces odours and mould that are hard to remove afterwards. Six hours is therefore the minimum within the city and twelve hours for long routes.
American and side-by-side fridges: extra considerations
This class needs particular attention for three reasons. First, size: they are usually wider than standard flat doorways, so the route must be measured before moving day rather than discovering the problem with the appliance halfway down a corridor. Some models allow the doors to be removed to reduce the width, which requires experience because the doors carry electrical and water connections. Second, weight: many exceed a hundred and fifty kilograms, which makes manual carrying dangerous and calls for a strapped appliance trolley and at least four people. Third, the water and ice dispenser: these models usually connect to a water line that must be closed, disconnected and drained completely before moving, and any water left in the tank or pipework will leak in transit. For these reasons the waiting time before switching on for this class is two hours longer than the table states.
Signs that a fridge was damaged in transit
Watch for these indicators in the first two weeks after a move, since catching them early means they can be dealt with under guarantee. First: weak cooling despite the thermostat being set to its lowest, the clearest sign of a partial blockage in the circuit. Second: the compressor running almost continuously without cycling off, whereas a healthy fridge runs in intervals. Third: unusual sounds — clicking, metallic noise or strong vibration — which call for an immediate shutdown. Fourth: a noticeable rise in the electricity bill with no other explanation. Fifth: abnormal ice build-up in the freezer or water leaking beneath the unit. If any of these appear, switch the appliance off and call a qualified technician at once; continuing to run a fridge with a blockage is what turns a repairable problem into a completely failed compressor.
Is an old fridge worth the cost of moving?
A practical question that deserves an honest calculation, particularly on long routes. Moving a standard fridge within Jeddah costs SAR 120 to 200 and an American one SAR 200 to 350. On intercity routes the cost rises because it occupies significant space in the truck. Compare that with your fridge's current second-hand value and its remaining useful life. If the fridge is under seven years old and cooling efficiently, moving it is clearly worthwhile. If it is over twelve years old, already cooling poorly or has had its compressor replaced, the arithmetic favours selling it and buying at the destination, especially as modern fridges are markedly more efficient in electricity use, and that saving offsets part of their price over a few years. We give our customers this opinion candidly at the survey.
Fridge moving checklist
Five steps, none of which can be skipped:
Disconnected 6 to 12 hours ahead?
Six hours for a move within Jeddah and twelve for long routes. Disconnecting an hour before the crew arrives achieves nothing: it neither stabilises the system nor melts the ice nor dries the interior.
Emptied, cleaned and completely dry?
Free of food, water and ice, wiped inside and thoroughly dried. Residual moisture in a sealed appliance produces odours and mould within hours in Jeddah's humid climate.
Doors and shelves secured?
Both doors taped with non-marking tape, and loose shelves and drawers removed and wrapped separately or secured inside. Loose glass shelves break easily in transit.
Will it travel upright and strapped?
Confirm before loading that the fridge will stand upright and be strapped rather than laid down. This single point is the difference between a fridge that lasts years and one that fails within two months.
Mistakes that ruin a fridge
Four errors that explain most post-move failures:
Laying it down to save space
The most common and most expensive error. A horizontal position drives compressor oil into the fine refrigeration lines, blocking them and leaving the compressor under-lubricated. If it has happened out of necessity, leave the fridge upright for a full 24 hours before switching on.
Switching it on the moment it arrives
The urge to plug it in immediately undoes every precaution taken beforehand. Wait two hours after a short move and four to six after a long one. The minutes you wait save an entire compressor.
Moving it full or with ice inside
The extra weight strains the appliance and its base during handling, and ice melts en route and soaks adjacent belongings in the truck. Empty it and let the ice melt fully the day before.
Dragging it along the floor or pushing it by the door
Dragging damages the feet and base and scratches the floor, and pushing by the door loosens its hinges and spoils the seal. Use a strapped appliance trolley, and lift rather than drag.
Further tips for moving a fridge
Practical details that protect the appliance and the rest of your belongings.
Use cool boxes for the food
Start running down the contents of the fridge and freezer a day before disconnection to reduce what needs moving. Put what remains in insulated cool boxes with ice packs. Frozen food survives hours in a well-sealed box, while exposed food spoils quickly in Jeddah's heat.
Do not put strong tape on a stainless steel front
Strong adhesive tape leaves residue on stainless steel fronts that is difficult to remove and can mark them. Use paper masking tape, or lay a blanket over the appliance first and secure that with stretch film rather than taping the appliance itself.
Clean behind the fridge before refitting it
A move is a rare opportunity to reach the back of the fridge. Clean the accumulated dust off the rear condenser before putting it in its new position; a dirty condenser noticeably raises electricity consumption and shortens the compressor's life.
Frequently asked questions about moving a refrigerator
What people ask most before and after moving a fridge:
If it travelled upright within the city, wait two hours. After a long intercity route, wait four to six hours. If it travelled lying down out of necessity, leave it standing upright for a full 24 hours so the compressor oil returns before power is applied.
At least six hours for a move within the city and twelve for a long route. The window allows pressures to equalise, ice to melt and the interior to dry, all of which protect both the appliance and the belongings travelling with it.
No, and there is no justification for it; the answer to limited space is a larger vehicle, not a tilted appliance. If it has happened out of necessity it must stand upright for a full 24 hours before switching on, and ideally be checked by a technician.
Weak cooling despite the lowest setting, the compressor running almost continuously, metallic or clicking noises, a rise in the electricity bill, and abnormal ice build-up or water leaking underneath. Switch it off and call a technician.
A standard fridge is SAR 120 to 200 and an American or side-by-side model SAR 200 to 350 within Jeddah, covering disconnection, wrapping, strapping and delivery inside the home rather than at the building door.
If it is under seven years old and cooling well, moving it is worthwhile. If it is over twelve years old, cooling poorly or has had its compressor replaced, selling it and buying at the destination is usually better value given modern appliances' efficiency.
Two hours of patience protect a compressor
Why we explain this to every customer.
Of all the faults attributed to furniture moving, refrigerator failure is simultaneously the most frequent and the easiest to avoid. Avoiding it needs no tools, no technical skill and no extra cost — only three rules: unplug it at least six hours ahead, always carry it upright, and wait the appropriate period before switching it on. Yet despite how simple those rules are, breaking them is the norm rather than the exception in this trade, because the mover who lays a fridge on its side to gain half a metre of truck space will never face the consequence: the failure will not appear for a month, by which time they have forgotten the job entirely. Wathab therefore made explaining these rules part of the coordination before moving day rather than after: we tell the customer exactly when to disconnect the fridge, we refuse to carry any appliance lying down however tight the space and use a larger vehicle instead, and we remind the customer at handover when the appliance may be switched on. And we publish this guide free and complete because it matters more that people know the rule, whether they move their fridge themselves or with any other company; a working compressor matters more than an extra booking.
