The hardest piece in any move

Sliding Wardrobe Dismantling and Moving in Jeddah

The sliding wardrobe ruins more moves than any other piece. Its doors are heavy and hang from a fine track, and any twist in the carcass stops them gliding once rebuilt. The rate is SAR 100 to 250, and the difference between a carpenter who knows these and one who does not shows up a month later, not on the day.

The rate and what it covers

Dismantling and refitting a sliding wardrobe costs SAR 100 to 250 depending on the number of doors, the size and how it is fixed. That covers full dismantling, wrapping the doors, carrying the tracks separately, and rebuilding and adjusting it at the new location. It does not cover replacement parts where a roller or track was already damaged before the work began.

Where the wardrobe is part of a full move, this is a separate line added to the transport price rather than hidden inside it, so you can compare the lines and drop anything you do not want.

Why the doors stop gliding after a move

Three causes, all of them before the piece reaches the vehicle.

The first is moving the wardrobe while assembled: the weight of the hanging doors pulls the carcass one way, the box loses square, and the tracks are no longer parallel. The second is forcing the doors off instead of lifting them from their proper hanging point, which bends the top edge. The third is carrying the top track in with the rest of the panels, where it is compressed underneath them and takes a bend invisible to the eye but enough to catch a roller.

None of these necessarily shows on fitting day. A door may glide slightly stiffly at first and get steadily worse, at which point it is hard to connect the fault with the move. So we check the tracks for true in front of the customer at fitting rather than after the crew has gone.

Types of sliding wardrobe and how they differ

01

Timber doors

The lightest and least sensitive, though the edges mark easily when being carried down.

02

Mirrored doors

The heaviest and most hazardous; removed first, wrapped, and carried upright rather than flat.

03

Flat-pack units

Assembled with fine fixings, so every part has to be labelled as it comes off.

04

Wall-fixed units

Need the fixings removed and the wall positions made good, which is stated in the quote in advance.

The type is identified during the survey, or from a clear photograph of the wardrobe open and closed, because both the price and the method change between them.

The correct removal order, step by step

1

Empty it completely

Clothes and drawers come out before anything else; internal weight is what twists the carcass.

2

Lift the doors off

Doors are lifted from their hanging point rather than pulled, then stood on edge and leaned, never laid flat.

3

Remove top and bottom tracks

The track is taken off, marked for orientation and carried separately from the panels.

4

Shelves then carcass

Shelves and dividers first, then the carcass sides, with fixings bagged and labelled.

5

Wrap

Doors are wrapped, mirrors especially, and panel edges protected with corner guards.

Reversing that order — taking the carcass apart before the doors, for instance — is what breaks most doors in DIY attempts.

Mirrored doors are the highest-risk item

A mirrored sliding door is heavy and fragile at the same time, and breaking one means more than losing a door — it is a direct hazard to whoever is carrying it. So it is treated as a standalone glass item rather than part of the wardrobe: bubble wrap, then a protective layer, carried upright and braced on both sides, with nothing stacked on it however light.

  • Never carry mirrored doors flat beneath other items, however short the distance.
  • Brace them upright in the vehicle rather than leaving them free-leaning.
  • Inspect the edges before loading; a small chip spreads with road vibration.
  • In an open vehicle add a layer against dust and sun — better still, use a closed body.

General glass packing is covered on packing furniture before a move.

Tracks and rollers: the parts everyone loses

The top track is a long, thin metal strip and the rollers are small, losable parts. In most failed wardrobe moves one of the two is the cause: a track bent under the weight of panels, or a roller lost in an unlabelled bag.

The procedure is simple but non-negotiable. The top track is marked to show which end is right, carried strapped to a straight board that stops it flexing, and the rollers and fixings go into a bag labelled with that wardrobe's name rather than into a general bag with the rest of the room. A wardrobe that arrives missing one roller cannot be fitted however sound everything else is.

Wall-fixed and built-in wardrobes

Some sliding wardrobes are fixed to the wall or built into an opening of a specific size. This needs a decision before the move rather than during it: a built-in unit can usually be taken apart, but fitting it in a new home depends on there being an opening of the same dimensions, which is rare.

In practice that means a built-in wardrobe may need carpentry work to fit a new position, or may not be worth moving at all. We say so plainly during the survey before you pay to transport something that will not be refitted. If the decision is to let it go, see old furniture disposal.

Can it be moved without dismantling?

Only in limited cases: a small single-door unit, a route with no tight turns, a lift that takes it upright, and a short distance. Even then the doors come off first to take the hanging weight off the carcass.

A wardrobe with three or more doors is never moved assembled however easy the route looks, because the danger is not clearance but the unbalanced weight twisting the box while it is carried. Trying to save here usually ends in a repair bill well above the cost of dismantling.

In storage

Always stored dismantled, and the track is the critical part.

Storing a sliding wardrobe assembled is an expensive mistake: the hanging weight stays on the carcass for every month it sits there, and the result is a distorted box on collection even though nothing ever moved it. So it is always stored dismantled, with panels stood on edge and separated rather than stacked flat.

The top track is stored straight and strapped to a board, because two months under the weight of wardrobe panels is enough to put in a bend the eye cannot see. Bags of rollers and fixings stay labelled with the wardrobe's name inside its own bundle rather than separate from it.

Fitting and adjustment at the new address

Refitting is not simply the reverse of removal, because the floor in the new place may not be as level as the old one. So fitting begins by levelling the base before the track goes on, then the doors are hung and the rollers adjusted until both panels glide evenly and close without a gap.

  • Level the base first; a track set out of true cannot be compensated for afterwards.
  • The doors are tested in front of you, opening and closing, before the crew leaves.
  • A ventilation gap is left behind the unit where it backs onto an external wall.
  • Spare fixings are handed over rather than thrown away.

Before you request the service

  • How many doors does the wardrobe have, and is one of them mirrored?
  • Is it free-standing, wall-fixed, or built into an opening?
  • Is there existing damage to the track or rollers before dismantling?
  • Is this part of a full move or a standalone job?
  • What is the ceiling height at the new position?
  • Is the wardrobe going into storage? If so it will be stored dismantled.

One photograph of the wardrobe open and one closed, together with those answers, is enough for a written price without a visit.

Frequently asked questions

SAR 100 to 250 depending on the number of doors, size and fixing type, covering removal, wrapping, carrying the tracks separately, refitting and adjustment.

Usually one of three things: the wardrobe was moved assembled and lost square, the doors were forced off, or the top track bent under the weight of panels in transit.

Only a small single-door unit, on a route with no tight turns and over a short distance, and even then the doors come off first. Three doors or more is never moved assembled.

As standalone glass: bubble wrap plus a protective layer, carried upright and braced on both sides with nothing stacked on them, ideally in a closed vehicle.

The wardrobe cannot be fitted without it, which is why rollers and fixings go in a bag labelled with that wardrobe rather than a general bag for the room.

No. It covers the labour; rollers or tracks already damaged before dismantling are noted at the survey and priced separately.

Only if there is an opening of the same dimensions, which is rare. It may need carpentry work, and we say so at the survey before you pay to move it.

Yes. The base is levelled first, then the rollers are adjusted until both doors glide evenly and close without a gap, and they are tested in front of you.

Always dismantled, panels on edge and separated, the track stored straight and strapped to a board, and rollers and fixings bagged and labelled.

Yes. Dismantling and refitting can be booked on its own, for instance when relocating the wardrobe inside the same home, and it is priced as its own line.

They do, but each cycle slightly widens the fixing holes, so original fixings must be reused and every panel labelled. Avoid repeated dismantling in a short period.
