Dina or closed truck? Choosing a moving vehicle in Jeddah

The question comes up before nearly every move: open dina or closed truck? The answer is not which is better but which suits your volume, your distance and your street. This is a practical comparison to help you decide before asking for a price.

What we are actually comparing

The dina is the everyday Jeddah term for a mid-size load-carrying vehicle with a rear bed, usually open or covered with a tarpaulin. It is widely used for limited loads within the city, moves easily through narrow streets and costs less.

The closed truck has a rigid box body with solid walls and a door. It carries more, allows the load to be strapped internally, and isolates the contents from dust, sun and rain. It suits larger moves and longer distances.

The difference between them is not quality of service but fit for the task. Using a large truck for a single room is waste; using a dina for a whole villa costs more in time and effort than it saves in fare.

When the dina is the right choice

The dina is not only the cheaper option; in certain situations it is technically the better one:

✓

Partial loads

A washing machine, a fridge and a few boxes, or a single large item collected from a showroom.

✓

A studio or single room

A limited load that fits a mid-size bed in one or two short runs.

✓

Narrow streets

Districts with tight internal streets or small gates that a large truck cannot enter.

✓

Shuttle work

Where the large truck has to stand further away, the dina brings the load to the door in short stages.

When a closed truck is a necessity

There are cases where saving is the wrong instinct, because the cost of one damaged item exceeds the entire difference:

  • Intercity moves: hours of vibration, sun and dust are more than an open bed can handle.
  • Large apartments and villas: the volume needs space and securing, and repeated dina runs stretch the day and double the effort.
  • Any chance of rain: water on upholstery or engineered board leaves permanent damage.
  • Appliances and screens: these need to be strapped upright against a body wall, which an open bed cannot offer.
  • High-value pieces: antiques, artwork and new majlis seating should never travel uncovered, however short the trip.

Published prices by load size

The price follows volume, not vehicle type

Moving prices by load size (SAR)
Load sizeIndicative price
Pickup load (small van)80 – 250
Studio / single room350 – 600
Two-bedroom apartment500 – 900
Three-bedroom apartment800 – 1,400
Four to five bedrooms1,200 – 1,900
Small villa1,500 – 2,500
Large villa2,500 – 4,000

A limited load by dina or pickup is SAR 80 to 250. Everything else is priced by volume, with vehicle type and number of runs decided during the free survey and stated in the written price.

Working out the real cost: runs against volume

The most common mistake is comparing the fare for one dina run against the price of a full move by truck. The honest comparison is across the whole day:

1

Count the runs honestly

Estimate how many dina runs your contents actually need. People always underestimate this, and in practice there is usually at least one more.

2

Multiply by the round trip

Each run means travel out and back, plus loading and unloading. That is the real time cost, not the distance alone.

3

Add crew hours

The crew stays all day. Two extra runs is real labour cost, not simply more time.

4

Compare outcomes, not headline prices

At this point a single truck is usually cheaper, faster and less risky for the furniture.

Packing changes with the vehicle

The vehicle decision and the packing decision are not separate; each determines the other:

  • On an open load, full wrapping becomes mandatory rather than optional, even for items that would otherwise travel under a blanket.
  • Upholstery and bedding go into closed bags rather than stretch film alone, because dust works into the weave.
  • Glass and mirrors never travel uncovered, however short the distance.
  • In a closed body, straps do the securing, which reduces the need to pack voids with blankets.
  • In both cases, filling the gaps between pieces is what stops movement, and movement causes most damage.

Moving in Jeddah’s narrow districts

Parts of central and southern Jeddah have tight internal streets and tightly packed houses with no parking. There the question is not what is best but what is possible, and the dina wins for straightforwardly practical reasons.

  • It can get in and turn around. A large truck that enters and cannot leave blocks the whole street, not just your move.
  • It stands closer to the door, and every metre of hand-carrying is time and effort.
  • It does not obstruct neighbours for hours in a street with no alternative route.
  • Two or three dina runs can genuinely be faster than solving a parking problem for a large vehicle.

The compromise we often use is a closed truck standing on a nearby main street with a dina shuttling to the door. You get box-body protection with small-vehicle access, and we assess whether it is worth it during the survey.

Questions to ask any mover before booking

Vehicle choice is one of the vaguest items in most quotations. Four questions reveal how serious an offer is:

  • Which vehicle and how many runs? A quote that names neither is not a quote, because those two items decide the length of the day.
  • Does the price include packing? On an open load in particular, packing is a condition of safe transport rather than an extra.
  • How many crew will come? Crew size decides whether the job takes half a day or a full one, and it affects the safety of heavy items.
  • What happens if an extra run is needed? You should know how that is charged in advance, not be surprised at the end of the day.

At Wathab the vehicle type, number of runs and crew size appear in the written price after the free survey, and the figure does not change once work has started unless something is agreed in writing first.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a moving vehicle

"Dina" is the local name in Jeddah for a mid-size flatbed vehicle, usually open or sheeted over. A closed truck has a rigid box body with a door, protects the load from dust, sun and rain and allows internal strapping. The dina suits short runs and small loads; the box truck suits larger volumes and longer distances.

The dina costs less to start with, SAR 80 to 250 for a limited load. But if your move needs more than two dina runs, a single truck is usually cheaper overall and much faster.

A studio or one-bedroom, yes, in one or two runs. Two bedrooms or more normally needs a larger vehicle or several runs, which pushes up both cost and time.

In Jeddah, yes. An open bed exposes bedding, majlis seating and upholstery to road dust, which is why we wrap everything fully even on short dina runs.

A closed truck is the only safe answer when rain is possible. A tarpaulin over an open bed is a stopgap, not something to rely on for a full household load.

The closed truck, without hesitation. A long haul means hours of vibration plus sun and dust exposure, and an open bed is not suited to it.

The base price follows load size rather than vehicle type, but the number of runs and the hours worked are affected directly, and that is what shows up in the written price.

We recommend one during the survey based on volume, distance and road conditions. The final decision is yours once we have explained the difference in cost, time and risk.

Yes. On some jobs a closed truck carries the load while a small vehicle shuttles the last stretch to the door where the street is too narrow.

Yes. Surveys are free within Jeddah and end with a written price stating vehicle type, number of runs and crew size.
